About the Author Dick Durrance II was a photographer with the Department of Army Special Photographic Office until he joined the staff of National Geographic. Durrance has won the National Press Photographers Association's Picture of the Year competition four times, and has been named Photographer of the Year (in 1972 and 1987) by two associations. He is an avid golfer.
