Editorial Reviews Book Description Van der Elsken's Hong Kong is a city of extraordinary atmosphere. The photographs, taken in 1959 and 1960, show a city not yet overwhelmed by neon and high-rise; a city that combines a deep sense of tradition with an energy in its streets that is both exhilarating and exhausting. The photographs show a great warmth for Hong Kong - a place Van der Elsken clearly loved and which undoubtedly fascinated him. Previously unpublished, Van der Elsken completed the final selection of photographs shortly before his death in 1990. About the Author Born in Amsterdam, Ed van der Elsken(1925-90) is recognised as one of the great photographers of the century. His books include Bagara, Jazz, and the widely acclaimed Sweet Life.
