This book fills a need for information on how to use digital imaging in practical terms. There are publications that discuss image processing from a technical or theoretical perspective, and many that provide tutorials for the fashion or fine art photographer (as evidenced by our Focal Press titles). Digital imaging technology, however, has been used in forensics since at least 1992, yet there is no tutorial available to address the issues of how to accomplish image processing in a forensic environment.
The book is divided into three sections The Essentials; The Digital Darkroom; and Image Analysis and Enhancement.
· The Essentials covers the basics of setting up Photoshop, working with the File Browser, information on image metadata and a chapter on Best Practices which includes information on case law, the Federal Rules of Evidence, digital negatives and audit trails.
· The Digital Darkroom provides step-by-step tutorials for performing typical darkroom functions, including making color balance corrections, brightness and contrast adjustments, printing, making contact sheets, etc.
· The Image Analysis and Enhancement section provides step-by-step tutorials from sizing an image 1:1 and making measurements on an image to noise reduction and image sharpening methods.
