Architecture and Feminism (Yale Publications on Architecture)
Editorial Reviews Midwest Book Review Originally conceived as the Yale Journal of Architecture and Feminism, Architecture And Feminism is the result of Debra Coleman, Elizabeth Danze, and Carol Henderson's efforts to create an ongoing forum at the Yale School of Architecture for the discussion of the relationship between architecture and feminism. In order to promote the idea that architecture and feminism is an important area of study, an open call for papers and projects led to over one hundred submissions from a diverse group of authors. Represented in Architecture And Feminism are Mary McLeod's Everyday and 'Other Spaces'; Deborah Fausch's The Knowledge of the Body and the Presence of History - Toward a Feminist Architecture; Amy Landesberg & Lisa Quatrale's See Angel Touch; Christine Magar's Project Manual for the Glass House; Manuela Antoniu's The Walled-Up Bride: An Architecture of Eternal Return; Molly Hankwitz's The Story of Hon-Katedral: A Fantastic Female; George Wagner's The Lair of the Bachelor; and Vanessa Chase's Edith Wharton, The Decoration of Houses, and Gender in Turn-of-the-Century America. Architecture Review "As the number of women in architecture has increased significantly over the last decade, so too have the questions surrounding the role of both the profession and academia in adequately reflecting this trend. Having said this, the 'project' of Architecture and Feminism is, in part, to question the generative forces behind both critical theory and professional practice. As the editors state in the introduction, the collection attempts to lay bare the degree to which contemporary architectural discourse is 'complicit' in perpetuating the troubling marginalization of women's contribution in the field.
