About the Author Fred S. Kleiner is Professor of Art History and Archaeology and Chairman of the Art History Department of Boston University, where he has taught since 1978. Prior to that he was a member of the faculty of the University of Virginia and a Fellow of the Agora Excavations of the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. He has also excavated at Cosa, Italy, with the American Academy in Rome. From 1985 to 1998, Professor Kleiner served as Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Archaeology. He is the author of more than a hundred publications on Greek and Roman art, architecture, and numismatics, including The Arch of Nero in Rome and scores of articles and reviews in the leading archaeological journals of North America and Europe. His research has been supported by grants from the American Council of Learned Societies, the American Philosophical Society, and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Professor Kleiner is also the co-author of the 10th, 11th, and 12th editions of Gardner's Art through the Ages, which in 2000 won both the Texty and McGuffey Prizes of the Text and Academic Authors Association as the best college textbook in the humanities and social sciences. Long recognized for his passionate teaching and devotion to students, Professor Kleiner has won Boston University's prestigious Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching and other teaching prizes as well as the College of Arts and Sciences Prize for Excellence in Advising in the Humanities. Christin J. Mamiya received her Ph.D. in art history from the University of California--Los Angeles, and is Professor of Art History at the University of Nebraska--Lincoln. A recipient of numerous teaching awards, including the Annis Chaikin Sorensen Award for Distinguished Teaching in the Humanities from the University of Nebraska in 2001, Professor Mamiya specializes in the areas of modern, postmodern, and Oceanic art. She has published a book on Pop art, as well as many articles, catalog essays, and book reviews. She is an active participant in the wider community as both a curator and lecturer.
