Henry Edwards Huntington: His Life and His Collections : A Docent Guide
Editorial Reviews Book Description This is an engaging account of the eventful lives of Henry Edwards and Arabella Huntington, leading twentieth-century philanthropists, and the extraordinary cultural institution they created in Southern California. Henry Huntington was a legendary book, art, and plant collector and a visionary leader in the development of Southern California. Arabella was one of the wealthiest women in the nation at the turn of the twentieth century and one of the most important art collectors of her generation. Spurgeon shares a behind-the-scenes view of both their personal lives and the development of the renowned cultural and educational center we know today. Separate chapters describe how the art collections came together under the guidance of the shrewd art dealer Joseph Duveen; how the library grew out of Mr. Huntington's passion for book collecting; and how the estate, a working ranch, evolved into one of the world's most important botanical gardens. About the Author Selena A. Spurgeon has been a docent at the Huntington Library for more than 30 years. In the early 1980s, she applied as a volunteer in the manuscript department, where, shortly afterward, the Huntington family papers were brought together. They so intrigued Spurgeon that the one-time food editor and book reviewer spent more and more hours each week in the Huntington's one-time residence, working on her highly readable book about the Huntington family, the house and the treasures in its galleries and gardens.
