It's a Fine Line: The Art of Bruce Johnson

Editorial Reviews Book Description Bruce Johnson's witty and intricate line drawings are familiar to many, from posters, prints, t-shirts, and coffee mugs. Now, for the first time, the artist's best-known images are gathered in one place and reproduced in handsome large-format detail. The drawings are sometimes whimsical, sometimes satirical. Many have outdoor themes, illustrating how people enjoy, make use of, and sometimes abuse the natural world. Others celebrate the imagination; some are based on puns. Whatever the subject, the pieces are always amusing and involving and rendered in Johnson's distinctive style. From the Inside Flap Bruce Johnson's humorous and intricate line drawings, including the popular "Tailgating," "Gentle Giants," and "Build Your Own Rainbow," are familiar to many Pennsylvanians, but his reputation as a fine artist extends well beyond the state. Now, for the first time, more than one hundred of Johnson's best-known images are gathered in one place and reproduced in handsome large-format detail.

Sometimes satirical, sometimes wistful, always amusing and involving, Johnson's drawings, which he calls his "statements," have been reproduced as prized limited-edition prints as well as on posters, T-shirts, puzzles, and mugs.

Many of the pieces have outdoor themes--"Sunday Sailors," "Life's a Beach," "Opening Day"--illustrating how people enjoy, make use of, and sometimes abuse the natural world. Others celebrate the imagination: "Floating Fantasies," "Go Fly a Kite," "The Great Humpty Dumpty Disaster." Still others are based on puns: "Brush Fire," "Sub Contractors," "Training Bra." Johnson has also created memorable images for corporate clients including Hersheypark, Reese's, and the Pennsylvania Farm Show.

The captivating art book includes a glimpse into Bruce Johnson's studio. The artist describes in his own words how he works and where he gets his ideas, and presents sketches and behind-the-scenes anecdotes that illustrate his creative process. It's a Fine Line: The Art of Bruce Johnson
