Editorial Reviews Book Description Combining the knowledge of his craft with intelligence, willpower, courage and art, a bullfighter uses a cloth (cape or muleta) to lead, dominate, pass, and kill a charging bull. This book offers an extensive photographic and literary study of the variety of passes performed in a bullfight.

Contemporary bullfighting is probably the most artful and sophisticated way certain cultures celebrate the bravery of the hunter. This ancient ritual can also illustrate the complex relationship between predator and prey, and between culture and nature. Ricardo Sanchez's vivid photographs reflect this exquisite "pas de deux," where the bull and the bullfighter trace the lines and forms of their existence with each pass. The texts provide detailed descriptions of how the passes are performed, what they mean in the bullring, and what they represent as metaphors of our broader relationships with nature and ourselves. PASSES is a unique visual and intellectual study of the intersection of tradition, culture, art, and nature in this ancient rite. About the Author Ricardo B. Sanchez was born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1953 and educated in Massachusetts at Deerfield Academy, Tufts University and the Museum School of Fine Arts Boston. For the past 30 years, he has lived in Caracas, New York and Madrid dedicating a substantial amount of his time to the interpretation of the photographic language as a fine art. His work has been exhibited in museums, international art fairs and galleries and Spain, Germany, the United States and Venezuela, and is part of public as well as private collections.

Jose Luis Ramon Carrion, a former novillero (bullfighter) turned journalist, is one of Spain's most respected critics on the subject of bullfighting, and the author of several volumes on the subject. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of 6 Toros 6 a journal devoted to bullfighting. In 1999 he won the Doctor Zumet Award for Literature for a work on the history of the pase natural.
