Pope John Paul II : His Remarkable Journey
Editorial Reviews Book Description Pope John Paul II: His Remarkable Journey is an extraordinary journey documenting the 25 years of the papacy of JPII, one of the most remarkable figures of the 20th century. Spanning from the days when Woytila was still a cardinal to his death and the election of today's Pope Benedict XVI, this book contains historical photographs and very personal moments of the life of the Pope. These revealing and poignant photographs show the Pope in his full humanity, and not just as the former head of the Catholic Church. Photographs of the Pope laughing, with his clothes blown by the wind, while President Jimmy Carter struggles to help fixing them, loosing his papal hat while kissing the ground, a beautiful series of six sequential photographs capturing the various intimate expressions of the Pope... all of these give the book a personal feeling. The book revisits the defining moments in the tenure of the Pope from Poland: the attempt on his life in St. Peter's Square in 1981, his epic travels to Latin America, the Middle East, India and the USA; and his dramatic returns to his homeland in 1979 and 1983 which fueled the rise to the Solidarity Labor Movement. The book includes an introduction by the organization's leader, former president of Poland and Nobel Peace Prize-winner, Lech Walesa, whose historic role in the unraveling of the Soviet empire was directly tied to the figure of John Paul II. Designed to be the size of an average hand-held bible, this book includes 180 images are bound in a 288 pages and promises to become a keepsake. The photographs are from the famed agency CONTACT PRESS IMAGES, headed by Robert Pledge who also edited the book.
