Editorial Reviews Book Description Photography is a revolutionary art medium that has changed the way in which the world is presented. It has become an indispensable mode of communication and a vital means of revealing and explaining the world. This comprehensive encyclopedia traces the amazing journey of photography, from the invention of the daguerreotype in 1829 to the digital photograph of today.

In outlining nearly two centuries of this innovative art form, the book touches on some of the medium's key themes, from portraits, nudes, and still lifes, to sports and fashion photography, photojournalism, news coverage, and NASA images. A team of specialists in the field explain photographic techniques and examine the various approaches to photography around the world. Using pictures that have changed our way of looking at the world, such as Eadweard Muybridge's Galloping Horse, and featuring biographies of 200 of the greatest photographers of all time-from Mathew Brady to Cindy Sherman-the encyclopedia delivers the complex history of photography in a format that will appeal to any reader.
