Editorial Reviews About the Author Mark Steinmetz holds an MFA from Yale University and has taught photography at Columbia College (Chicago), the University of Tennessee (Knoxville), and the University of Georgia. He has exhibited and published widely and is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. His work is held in collections at the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Fine Art in Houston, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Mark Steinmetz resides in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Janet Lembke winters in the Shenandoah Valley, gardens and fishes in coastal North Carolina, and writes in both places. Her books include poetry, literary translation, and collections of essays. Her original poems based on archaic Latin fragments appeared in Bronze and Iron (University of California Press, 1973). She has also worked as the poet in a poet-scholar team translating four Greek tragedies-Aeschylus' Suppliants and Persians, Euripides' Hecuba and Electra (Oxford University Press, 1975, 1981, 1991, 1994 respectively). Her essays deal with the natural world and wildlife, including some of the wild people who live in the rural fastnesses of coastal North Carolina. Among the essay collections in this genre are Dangerous Birds, about birds, of course; Skinny Dipping, immersion in water, myth, and being human; Shake Them 'Simmons Down, about persimmons, loblolly pines, and other New World trees; and Despicable Species, On Cowbirds, Kudzu, Hornworms and Other Scourges (The Lyons Press, 1992, 1994, 1996, 1999 respectively). Her most recent collection, Touching Earth, recounts her years of vegetable gardening, including encounters with weeds, bugs, and eccentric neighbors (Burford Books, 2001).
Janet Lembke's days are not filled solely with grubbing around with vegetables, scaling fish, cleaning blue crabs, or sitting at a computer keyboard. Cooking brings much satisfaction and she is currently cooking up a storm for a book-in-progress: It's Soup! Sixty Recipes that Stick to Your Ribs (The Lyons Press, Fall, 2001).
